Administration & Setup

Setup is the configuration that makes everything else behave correctly. It is typically done once at go-live by an admin or consultant, with smaller adjustments thereafter. Treat it as the foundation — bad setup compounds into bad transactions, and bad transactions compound into bad reports.

Concepts to know first

  • Master — a reference list used by transactions (items, parties, locations, ledgers, etc.).
  • Effective date — many setup changes (rates, salary structures) carry an effective date so the past does not change.
  • Access control — setup screens should be restricted to the admin role. Operational users should not see them.
Important — Changes made here ripple through the entire application. Restrict access to one or two trained users. Take a backup before any large setup change.
